Hello fellow organizers!
As the academic year winds down for some of us and starts ramping up for others (fiscal year deadlines, anyone?), we sincerely wish you all time for rest and regeneration. We began our card campaign in November, connecting with hundreds of you, so it’s important to us to keep you in the loop with our ongoing communications with leadership.
Since our last update, a small contingent of staff union volunteers have been meeting with the HR department and Berklee’s legal counsel to “define our unit.” What does this mean? Well, Berklee appears to be ready to recognize us as a union, but they do not want to include confidential employees. Read on.
NEWS:
WORKING TOWARD UNIT RECOGNITION
This is not without sacrifice. Many people who helped us get to this point stepped down for the greater good of our community so we can move forward to voluntary recognition. This unfortunately included members of the Title IX team, HR, Institutional Research & Assessment, and security guards. The next step is to get an agreement document from Berklee recognizing us as a union.
Looking Ahead: Bargaining
Ideas? Input? We have created a form where card signers can add in items they would like brought up in bargaining. Thoughts on AI? Grievance process? Please share – we want this to represent as many of our staff as possible, and your unique experiences will allow us to move forward with a more complete picture. Share your ideas here!

| WHO WE ARE: The BCM & BCB Staff Union has partnered with the AFT (American Federation of Teachers) to build a coalition, with additional support from the Berklee Faculty Union, and Studio Operations (represented by IBEW2222). In 2025, our leadership began outlining the demands of the staff union based on feedback from our workplace issue form. Want to see these demands, add your own, and help improve working conditions at Berklee and Boston Conservatory? Contact us and join our team by emailing: staffunionbcmbcb@gmail.com. | UNION INFORMATION: Union members make 15-20% more than non-union workers. Unions provide protection and guidance for workplace complaints. See our union FAQ here. We are working hard to make sure all of Berklee and BoCo’s staff are represented! The best way to make sure you and your colleagues are represented in our demands and our future negotiations is to come to a meeting and join us. This is very important to all of us- your voice deserves to be heard! |
